Sodium permanganate, with the chemical formula NaMnO₄, is a close relative of potassium permanganate and is also a strong oxidizing agent. It usually exists as purple-red to reddish-purple crystals or solutions, with the most common commercial form being an aqueous solution of sodium permanganate (usually at a concentration of 40%).
Main Application Areas
Water Treatment (Core Advantage Area): Widely used in drinking water and wastewater treatment as an oxidant, disinfectant, iron and manganese removal agent, algae inhibitor, and odor control agent. Its liquid form facilitates automated dosing and offers high efficiency.
Chemical Synthesis: Participates in organic synthesis reactions as a strong oxidant.
Medical and Disinfection: Formerly used in the formulation of external disinfectants and mouthwashes, but its modern application has significantly decreased.
Other Areas: Used for flue gas desulfurization, wood preservation, and the treatment of fish ponds and circulating water systems.
